Well, it's been a busy 2007, whatnot
with all the premier games that've slipped in during the holidays. The
Orange Box, Call Of Duty 4, Crysis, Bioshock, you get the idea. Also
slipping in unannounced was Unreal Tournament 3, which I randomly bought
while staring blankly into the shelves of my local game store. So my
thoughts?
Fuck, Steam is selling the game for $29.99, Instead I've pissed away $50!
On a more serious note: It's a good game, but it's not worth 30 dollars.
Maybe 20 in it's current state.
I don't think I need to tell all the FPS junkies that read this what the
Unreal Tournament series is, but for the rest of you boring, normal,
clueless people, UT was one of the early shooting games out there at the
time, along with Quake and Half-Life (No, not "like Counter-Strike", you
little camping, awp-ing retards). You could describe a game of UT as a
bunch of little kids running around, who had each snorted about 20
kilograms of pure sugar... Then again, that's not much of a step up from
CS, now is it?
A piss-weak 'sequel' came in the form of UT2003, dead a year later when
UT2004 was released. And now 3 years later, we have UT3. I'll get the
praise out of the way now: Unreal Tournament 3 is utterly gorgeous. There,
now let's move on.
I've just said that the graphics are utterly gorgeous, detailed futuristic
landscapes and vehicles abound. But there are still problems, the
brightness could be toned down a notch, and the scenery could be made more
vivid. (For the mentally slow: Imagine taking a photo of some hot swimsuit
model and throwing it into the washing machine with your clothes. Let's
also say that your also mentally slow friend also poured 4 gallons of
bleach in. That's basically the graphics of UT3: Still beautiful and hot,
but also faded and washed out.)
The music is mostly just remixes from older UT games. I mean, you don't
need much in the way of music to please little kids on a sugar overdose,
now do you? Though, I would've liked a surround sound option to be
included, but there is none. As for the sound, it is basically the usual
explosions and gunfire, though some of the AI speech makes you feel as if
you were playing a game on Xbox live: full of inbred 13 year olds.
UT3 is also touted as having a singleplayer campaign included, unlike
previous titles. They should've just kept it like the previous titles. The
campaign does nothing for the game, and is just a bunch of slightly
tweaked versions of the multiplayer maps. A generic plot, "Evil people
killed my friends and family, now I must get my revenge". Really, they
could've tried harder.
... Not to mention how irritatingly stupid your teammates are. You cannot
play a game of capture the flag and have them actually capture the flag,
you'll have to help them or do it yourself. And when playing on warfare?
They basically run around with like a giddy little boy with down syndrome,
only to be killed off by the oddly competent enemy AI. You want to push
for the next control point? Don't expect any teammates to be able to
defend the current one.
I haven't tried multiplayer as of yet, but from what I've heard, the
numbers of people actually playing online are pitiful. Maybe a couple a
deathmatch and team deathmatch servers each filled up, but good luck on
finding a remotely decent capture the flag or warfare servers filled up.
Maybe it's different on the PS3, but we know that all people that own
PS3's are rich, friendless, imaginary people.
To sum it all up: Really, what has this new incarnation have to offer us
over UT2004? Forget that, what does UT3 have to offer that similar
shooters don't? A game that's basically a glorified deathmatch isn't worth
$50. $30 dollars seems fairer, but even then I'd be hesitant. The
potential modding community might justify the current price tag, but right
now it's nonexistent.
